Have you ever wondered about becoming a consultant? Especially an independent consultant?
Or maybe you already are one but you’re second guessing that you have what it takes.
Keep reading this article to find out.
Recently, many people have been asking me different versions of the same question:
What does it take to be a successful independent consultant?
The truth is, it depends.
You need a certain level of education, skill, and capability. But consultants, primarily independents, also need abilities and mindsets that aren’t necessarily obvious.
My success came first from learning to leverage the entrepreneurial tendencies I inherited from my grandmother and parents. Later, I learned valuable lessons with my husband while we tried our hand at various business ventures.
When I reflected on this question, I realized something: a lot of ‘what it takes’ to be a successful entrepreneur are the same qualities you need to be a successful independent consultant. Because, ultimately, we’re business owners.
That’s why I’ve decided that this week I’ll share an article titled, 40 Signs You Have What It Takes to be An Entrepreneur by Ross Simmonds.
This article has a fantastic list of the traits you need to be in our type of consulting business. Some are funny, others are weird but true, and many make you think twice and reflect.
There is no ‘right’ answer or score—it’s an exercise in self-reflection.
When I reviewed this list, I said ‘yes’ to 33 of the 40 items. The ones I said ‘no’ to made me take a moment to reflect: did I need to make any changes? Or mitigate any of my ‘no’ answers?
What does that say about me? I chose to interpret it as I’m meant to solve problems, and I love doing it as an entrepreneur, a business owner. 😉
Are you curious what you may learn about yourself? If you click on the link, then you just gave yourself your first ‘yes’ to having what it takes to be a successful independent consultant.
